Finding Balance: Do You Work to Live or Live to Work?

Is your work your life, or are you just simply living your life?

Work may devour you if you live to work. Passion can become a preoccupation, threatening your work-life harmony. On the other hand, working to live deprives you of a fulfilling job.

There's a thin line between being dedicated to your job and becoming obsessed with it, and if you live to work, you may be there. Your work-life equilibrium may be jeopardized if your interest in your job becomes an obsession, or if you give too much of yourself to your work.

If you work to eat, your job is just a means to an end. To enjoy life after work, you work hard. Your hobbies are outside of work. You enjoy family, hobbies, travel, and more. Perhaps your employment is helping you achieve non-professional aspirations and goals. You put in your time and effort at work, but you don't feel rewarded by success or recognition.

Neither is the "right" way to live your life, but I lean toward the working-to-live approach because, well, life is short. While I still can, I plan on making the most of this life.

The topic of leisure is rarely discussed, but the topic of labor is often extensively debated. It seems that in the past few decades, it has become a badge of honor to be a worker who consistently shows impressive rises in their professional standing. This is what happens when people are raised in a society where the goal of life is to accomplish as much as possible at all times.
